On Cloud Nine: State Sales Taxation of Cloud Computing

April 18th, 2013
1:00 pm ET ( 12:00 pm CT, 11:00 am MT, 10:00 am PT )

State sales tax statutes, most of which pre-date the computer age, were not drafted and enacted to contemplate cloud computing. Very few states have statutes or regulations that directly address the sales taxation of digital goods, such as downloaded software, videos, books, or music, let alone access to software, data storage, or other services performed in the ‘cloud.’ Consequently, guidance on how states tax cloud computing is both difficult to find and research intensive, with most guidance coming from state tax department rulings and advisories.

This live audio conference is intended to short-circuit that intensive research process and provide up-to-date information on how the various states approach the sales taxation of cloud computing. It will equip attendees with an understanding of how states view cloud computing services within the context of sales taxation, how the characterization of a service providers contracts drives the analysis, and trends in sales taxation among the states.

2012 IBC Chapter 10-Means of Egress, A Building Official’s Perspective

April 11th, 2013
1:00 pm ET (12:00 pm CT, 11:00 am MT, 10:00 am PT)

IBC’s Chapter 10, Means of Egress is one of the most important chapters of the code and it is critical to have a good working knowledge of the requirements contained in the Chapter. It has been reported that a building will experience at least one substantial fire in its lifetime and that is when the importance of a code compliant exit system will be put into use. The requirements in Chapter 10 are intended to address the exiting needs when the building is experiencing an emergency from a disaster such as a fire or earthquake. However, the day-to-day operations are important for the safe egress in nonlife threatening situations. The movement of large numbers of people in a nonemergency can be just as challenging as designing for a life threatening emergency. There are 1000’s of trips, slips and falls in the United States every year and almost all of these occur as people use the exit system. Don’t let your design or inspection become the action that results in a lawsuit.
